Cool Tools For Schools

http://www.cooltoolsforschools.wikispacescom/

This is a website that provides useful links in various aspects in studying.

For example, if you require a website that would help organise and present data in a presentation for a school assessment, you simply click on the 'Presentations' tab and a list of websites that help you do this comes up.

In the same way there are tabs and links to organising photos, getting collaborative work done, writing tasks online, drawing, audio, image etc.

Etherpad

Etherpad is possibly the simplest online tool that can be used to do collaborative work online.

It does not require a created account (username and password) but rather works by sharing a URL after having created a 'pad' on a 'Public Pad'.

Etherpad uses real-time processing to get work done instantaneously. Work is updated every half a second.

Skydrive & iGoogle

Skydrive works a little like Google Docs, except you save folders online and access anywhere so long as internet is available.

In preparation for organisation of notes in Year 11, I have created folders for every subject under the categories ' Study Notes' and 'Assessments'

iGoogle

iGoogle is a useful customizable online homepage that grants access to a search engine and various other gadgets that can help organise your life. 'Gadgets' appear as boxes on the homepage and vary in what they can be used for. Eg. weather forecast, news, comic strip etc.

Tabs can be added to the homepage that organise categories under where certain gadgets and information go.

For example, I have created a 'Schools' tab that has useful tools to help in homework and assignments on an online-basis. The gadgets I have added here are To-Do List, Scientific Calculator, Dictionary, Sticky Note, Word of the Day. Another gadget I have added is a 'google bookmarks' app that lets me save links to various other sites like SkyDrive and Outlook.

Web 2.0

Using Google Docs, it is possible to create and save documents online.

The types of documents available on Google Docs. are:

  • Word Processor

  • Presentation

  • Spreadsheet

  • Form - can be used to create a survey

Outlook has a link to SkyDrive
SkyDrive lets you create folders and tthereby subfolders to organise and store files.

This is useful in sorting out various files in student subjects.

Being able to store data online allows one to access these folders anywhere and anytime.

Outlook could also be used to send and receive e-mails.
